### The vent is the appliance

More than on any other machine in the house, a dryer’s performance is decided by something that is not part of the dryer. A duct with three bends and twenty feet of run, or a shared building riser, will make a healthy machine look tired, and the symptom — long cycles, hot laundry room, clothes still damp — is exactly what a failing element looks like from the outside. We measure rather than guess, and we will tell you when the answer is a duct rather than a part.

### Gas and electric are different visits

An electric dryer’s heating side is an element and two protective devices; a gas dryer’s is an igniter, a valve with coils and a flame sensor, plus a gas connection that has to be left right. Tell us which you have when you book. It decides what rides on the van and, on a gas machine, how the safety checks at the end of the visit are done.

### It runs but takes two or three cycles to dry a load.

Nine times in ten that is airflow, not heat. The vent run in a South Florida building is often long, sometimes shared and rarely cleaned, and a dryer that cannot push moist air out simply recycles it. We check the duct before we check the element, because replacing an element on a blocked vent gives you the same complaint a month later.

### No heat at all.

Now it is likely the heating side. On an electric machine that is the element, a thermal cutout or a thermostat, and on a gas machine the igniter, the coils or the flame sensor. A cutout that has opened is a symptom rather than a cause, though: it opened because the machine overheated, and if we fit one without finding out why, it will open again.

### It squeals or thumps as the drum turns.

Rollers, the idler pulley or the belt, and it is worth booking before the belt goes rather than after. Noise on these machines is one of the few problems that gives real warning, and a drum that is caught early is a straightforward job with common parts.
