### It runs, but hardly any ice comes out.

On a countertop machine that is usually water rather than cold. The pump moves water over the freezing fingers; if it has lost prime, if the reservoir is below its mark, or if scale has narrowed the path, the cycle still runs and produces very little. Descaling with the maker's own routine is worth doing before anybody is called out.

### It says the basket is full when it is empty.

That is the level sensor, and on these machines it is usually an optical pair that gets fooled by splash, scale or a misplaced basket rather than a failed part. Wiping the sensor windows and seating the basket properly fixes a good share of them.

### Is a countertop machine worth a service call at all?

Sometimes not, and we will say so. These are inexpensive appliances, and a compressor or sealed-system problem on one is rarely worth the labor. Scale, pump and sensor problems are a different matter and are usually quick. The diagnostic is what separates the two, and we would rather tell you not to spend the money than take it.
