There is a padlock symbol on the display when it is engaged. Find the pad with the same symbol — on many of these it is shared with **Heated Dry** or **Cancel** — and hold it for about three seconds. Hold, not tap. The symbol goes out and the machine answers again.

Two things about this lock are worth knowing because they are what make it confusing.

**It survives a power cut.** Cutting the breaker for ten minutes does nothing to it. That is deliberate — a lock that could be defeated by a power interruption would be no lock at all — but it is exactly why a household concludes the machine has failed. Everything else in the kitchen resets and the dishwasher does not.

**Nobody remembers switching it on.** It is engaged by holding a pad, and the usual explanation is a sleeve, a cloth or a forearm crossing the panel while somebody cleaned the front. Children reaching the controls is the other one.

## The number that is not a code

If the display shows a number between one and twenty-four and the machine is sitting there doing nothing, that is not a lock and it is not an error. It is **delay start**, counting down in hours.

One press of cancel clears the delay. A second press cancels the selected cycle and starts a drain routine. A third stops the drain routine and switches the machine off — which is the way out if you have already pressed it twice and are now watching it pump.

The third case looks identical from the kitchen: the panel lights up, the cycle is selected, nothing happens.

Every dishwasher has a switch inside the door latch that has to close before anything is permitted. When it stops making contact reliably, the machine is not refusing — it does not believe the door is shut.

The test is one push. Press the door firmly closed with a hand and try to start it. If it runs, that switch is the repair, and in a builder's kitchen the usual causes are mechanical and cheap: a strike plate knocked out of alignment, a cabinet panel that has shifted, or a spring in the handle that has given up.

## The order that saves a visit

- Look for the padlock symbol. If it is there, hold the pad.- Read the number, if there is one. Under twenty-five means hours, and cancel clears it.- Push the door and try again. If it starts, it is the latch switch.- Only then cut power for three minutes.
