### The machine is not refusing, it does not believe the door is shut

A dishwasher that will not start is far more often a switch than a control. The latch carries a microswitch that has to close before anything is allowed to happen, and in a builder's kitchen the usual causes are mechanical and cheap: a strike plate knocked out of alignment, a cabinet panel that has shifted, or a spring in the handle that has given up. The other half of this job is the door balance — a door that drops open rather than staying where you put it has a broken cable or spring, not a hinge.

Test the latch switch electrically

A latch that feels fine and reads open is exactly why this gets misdiagnosed as a board.

Check the door springs and cables

A broken cable drops the door and stresses the hinge and the seal on every use.

Look at how the machine is fitted

A dishwasher racked slightly in its opening after new countertops binds and will not latch. That is an installation correction, not a part.

Adjust and lubricate the hinge

Where the parts are sound, the door is set to close under its own weight without slamming.

Run a cycle with the door watched

Because a latch that releases mid-cycle presents to the owner as a random stop.

### It starts if I hold the door closed. Is that the latch?

That is the switch inside the latch not making contact until you add the pressure yourself. The part is small and stocked, and it is the whole repair in most of these calls.

### The door falls open now instead of staying half way. Why?

The counterbalance. There is a spring and cable each side of the tub, and when one breaks the door swings under its own weight. Fitting only the broken side is what makes it come back.
