# Frigidaire dishwasher drain and pump repair

### Standing water is usually the disposal, not the dishwasher

The first thing worth checking costs nothing: whether the knockout plug was ever removed from the garbage disposal when the machine was installed. In a kitchen built to a schedule that is a real and common miss, and it produces a machine that has never drained properly since the day it was fitted. After that the order is the filter, the check valve and the air gap, and only then the pump itself — which on this platform is a stocked part rather than an ordered one.

What this involves

The filter and the sump before the pump, always

The blockage is often under the sink rather than in the machine

We show you the filter so the call does not repeat

Look in the sump first

Glass, seeds, a bone fragment, a label from a jar. This is the commonest answer and it costs nothing to find.

Check the drain hose and its high loop

A hose without a loop siphons the sink back into the machine; a crushed one behind the kickplate does the same as a blockage.

Check the disposal connection

A knock-out plug left in place after a new disposal was fitted is a classic, and it is not the dishwasher's problem.

Test the pump under power

Only after the passive causes are ruled out, and with the impeller inspected rather than assumed.

Run a full cycle and watch it drain

Because a partial blockage clears once and comes back on the next heavy load.

### There is an inch of water in the bottom after every cycle. Is that normal?

A film in the sump is normal and is meant to keep the seal wet. An inch that you can scoop is not, and it means the machine finished its cycle believing it had drained.

### It drains if I run the disposal first. What does that tell you?

That the restriction is downstream of the machine — the disposal, its knockout or the branch into the trap — rather than in the dishwasher's own pump. That is a cheaper visit and a different one.
