### Gritty or cloudy: two complaints, two different visits

Grit left on dishes is a water problem — the spray arms are not turning freely, the filter is loaded, or the machine is not getting hot enough to dissolve detergent. Cloudiness is usually not a problem with the machine at all but South Florida water plus a rinse aid nobody refills, deserves saying plainly rather than being turned into a repair. We check the arms, the filter, the inlet screen and the incoming temperature before anything is replaced, because on this platform three of those four cost nothing.

Take the arms off and clear every hole

Scale and food both block them, and a partly blocked arm cleans some of the rack perfectly, which is why the complaint sounds like loading.

Rinse the filter and look at what it held

A year of neglect recirculates what it caught, and this is the single most useful habit we can hand back to an owner.

Measure the incoming water temperature

A machine fed from a long cold run heats what arrives; short cycles then under-perform with nothing wrong.

Test the detergent dispenser

A flap held shut by a tall plate, or a wax motor that has failed, leaves the cup full.

Check hardness and rinse aid

Cloudiness that wipes off is scale; cloudiness that does not is etching, and only one of those has a repair.

### Should I be rinsing everything before it goes in?

Scrape, do not rinse. Modern detergents need something to work on and these machines sense the soil in the water; a load of pre-rinsed dishes can actually come out worse.

### The glasses have gone permanently cloudy. Can that be reversed?

If it is mineral film, yes, with an acid rinse. If it is etching — glass that has been attacked by soft water and hot cycles over years — it is permanent, and no repair to the machine will bring it back.
