# Frigidaire dryer heating element replacement

### It fails open, and it fails quietly

An element that has burned through gives no smell, no noise and no warning — the machine simply becomes a tumbler. What is worth knowing is why they burn through, because it is seldom age on its own. Restricted airflow keeps the element hotter for longer on every cycle, so a vent that has been half blocked for two years is what usually kills it, and fitting a new element into the same duct means doing this again. We measure the element, the fuses and the thermostats together, since one failure regularly takes another with it.

What this involves

A cold tumble on an electric machine, with the cutouts tested first

A blocked duct kills elements — the vent is part of this repair

Wide parts channel: this is usually a same-visit job

Test the element cold

Continuity and resistance, and a look at where it has failed. A break at one end tells a different story from a sagging coil.

Check every thermostat and cutout in the circuit

They fail together often enough that changing only the element is a false economy.

Inspect the duct and clean it

The reason the old element failed, in most cases we attend.

Fit and check clearance

An element that touches its housing shorts and takes the new part with it.

Measure exhaust temperature at the end

With the duct connected, which is the only measurement that means anything.

### Can the element be repaired rather than replaced?

A coil can be stretched back and rejoined and it will run for a while, but it never has the same resistance again and the joint is the next failure. On a badge where the part is stocked, it is not a trade worth making.

### How long should a new one last?

In a clean duct, many years — longer than most people keep the dryer. In a duct with a flattened section behind the machine, sometimes not even two, which is why we quote the vent in the same conversation.
