### A zone stuck on full is not the element

Two complaints arrive here and they belong at opposite ends of the machine. A zone that does nothing is usually the element or its connection, and on a coil top it is often just the receptacle the coil plugs into, burned where it has been arcing for years. A zone stuck on full heat is something else entirely: an infinite switch whose contacts have welded closed, which is why it should be switched off at the breaker rather than left to be dealt with next week.

Test the element cold

Resistance and insulation. A visual check misses an element that fails when hot.

Inspect the receptacle and terminals

Burnt contacts under a plug-in element are common and are a heat risk as well as a failure.

Test the infinite switch

Both its contacts and its cycling. A switch stuck closed leaves a zone at full power, which is the one to treat as urgent.

Check the glass and the seals on a ceramic top

A spill that has reached the wiring below changes the job entirely.

Verify each zone at several settings

Because a switch that works at high and not at low will otherwise come back next month.

### One zone heats but only on high. Where does that point?

At the switch rather than the element. Those switches work by cycling on and off, so a set of contacts that has welded gives you full power or nothing, with none of the settings between.

### The coil element sparked and now the zone is dead. Is the whole cooktop finished?

Rarely. That is usually the receptacle behind the coil rather than the top, and both the coil and the block are stocked parts on this badge.
