# Frigidaire evaporator fan repair

### The noise stops before the cooling does

On a single-evaporator cabinet this fan is the only thing moving cold air into the section people actually open, so its failure looks like a refrigeration problem and is not one. Two things kill it here, both of them local: bearings that have been running in a humid kitchen for a decade, and a blade that has been fouled by frost until the motor stalls against it. The second is why we look at the defrost circuit in the same visit — a fan replaced under a coil still in ice is a part fitted to fail again.

Listen with the door switch held in

The fan runs with the door shut, so the test is to hold the switch and listen. A fan that only chirps when cold is still a failing fan.

Measure the air at the vents

No air at the fresh-food outlet with a cold freezer is the classic reading for this.

Look for ice on the blade and the shroud

Where the blade is packed in ice, the fan is a symptom and the defrost circuit is the cause. Replacing the motor alone guarantees a return visit.

Check the supply to the motor

A fan that is not being told to run is not a failed fan, and on these cabinets that is the board or the door switch.

Fit and verify airflow

Air measured at the vents again with the panel back on, and temperatures rechecked before the visit ends.

### The fan is loud and the refrigerator still cools. Can it wait?

It can, but not indefinitely, and the noise is the cheap part of the warning. A motor grinding in its bearings is drawing more current than it should and slowing down, and the temperature in the fresh-food section starts drifting up long before the fan actually stops.

### Why did the fan fail again a year later?

Usually because the reason it stalled the first time was ice, not age. If the defrost heater or its thermostat is dead, frost rebuilds on the coil and the new blade meets the same wall.
