Twelve induction ranges and eight induction cooktops are current products here, which is unusual in this fleet — several of the makes we work on do not build induction at all. What changes on a service call is that half the complaints are not failures. A zone that will not start because the pan is not ferrous, cycling that sounds like the machine hesitating, a fan that runs on after cooking: all normal. The real failures are cooling and control — a blocked intake, a fan that has stopped, a coil or board that has overheated as a result.

What this involves

Most 'failures' are the pan or a dirty sensor, and we check those first

Fan, power board and coil are the genuine failures, and they announce themselves differently

Test with a known good pan

Ferrous, flat and covering enough of the zone. This ends a real share of these calls in one minute.

Clean and check the surface sensors

A film of burnt-on spill over a sensor makes the hob shut a zone down as if it were overheating.

Listen to and inspect the cooling fan

Induction generates its heat in the electronics; a blocked or failed fan shows as zones cutting out after a few minutes.

Test the coil and the power board

Zone by zone, because a single dead zone and a whole-hob failure point at different parts.

Check the supply

These draw hard, and a loose connection at the terminal block produces intermittent shutdowns that look like a board failure.

### The cooktop shuts a zone off part way through cooking. Is that overheating?

That is where it points, and the cause is usually airflow rather than the electronics. These have a fan and an intake underneath, and a drawer packed to the top beneath the cooktop is enough to block it.

### My pan works on one zone but not another. Is a zone dead?

Not necessarily. Zones differ in diameter and minimum pan size, so a small pan that a large zone cannot detect will work perfectly on the smaller one next to it — that is detection, not failure.
