# Frigidaire self-clean and door lock repair

### The cycle that breaks more ranges than it cleans

Self-clean takes the cavity to around nine hundred degrees, and that is hard on everything near it — the door lock motor, the thermal fuse behind the panel, the sensor, and the control itself. So this call arrives in two shapes: a door still locked after the cycle finished, and a range that stopped working entirely during one. Both are ordinary repairs, and the advice that goes with them is the same one every time: on an older machine, the cycle is more likely to break the oven than the oven is to need it.

What this involves

A locked door after cleaning is usually a temperature reading, not a seized lock

Forcing it costs more than the visit: hinges and lock assemblies are dear

Self-clean is hard on these ovens, and we say so

Read what the control believes

Cavity temperature as the board sees it. That number explains a door that will not open.

Test the lock motor and its switches

Motor, cam and the two switches that report position. A motor that runs without moving the cam is a common one.

Check the sensor and the wiring

A high-reading sensor after a clean cycle is a frequent survivor of the heat.

Release the door safely

By hand at the mechanism where necessary, rather than by force at the handle.

Advise on self-clean honestly

These cycles cook the control, the sensor and the door seal. On an older oven we usually advise against them, and explain why.

### The door has been locked for hours and the oven is cold. What now?

Cutting power at the breaker for ten minutes releases many of these, and it is worth trying before we come out. Where the lock motor has failed, the door has to be opened from inside the panel and forcing it damages the frame.

### Should I use self-clean at all?

On a range under a few years old and with an hour of ventilation, it is what it was built for. On an older one we suggest a steam cycle or doing it by hand, and that is experience rather than caution.
