# Frigidaire washer drain pump replacement

### Nine current machines, and most of what we open is older

This maker's laundry line is now nine machines, which says nothing about what is actually installed in South Florida: the front-loaders and top-loaders of the last fifteen years are everywhere, and this is the job they call for most. What blocks the pump is almost always domestic rather than mechanical — a coin, an underwire, the corner of a dryer sheet — and it sits in the trap ahead of the impeller. Opening that trap first is the difference between a part fitted and a part sold.

What this involves

The trap before the pump: coins and socks outnumber failed pumps

A pump that hums without moving water is jammed, not dead

The drain hose and the standpipe are part of this, especially in a condominium

Empty the filter trap and look at what comes out

Behind the kickplate on a front-loader. This is the step owners are never shown and it is the answer often enough to matter.

Listen to the pump under power

A hum with no flow is an obstruction or a seized impeller; silence is electrical.

Check the hose and the standpipe

A kinked hose behind the machine, or a shared stack backing up, produces the same complaint with a healthy pump.

Fit the pump and clear the housing

New pumps fail early when the debris that killed the last one is left in the sump.

Run a full drain and spin

Measured rather than assumed, because a partial blockage passes a short test.

### The machine fills and washes and then just sits there full. Is that the pump?

That is where it points, but not necessarily to a failed one. A pump held still by a coin sounds exactly like a dead pump through a closed door, and the trap is checked before anything is quoted.

### Is there a filter I should be cleaning myself?

On the front-loaders yes — a small access door low on the front hides the trap, and clearing it twice a year prevents most of these calls. Put a towel down first; it holds more water than anybody expects.
