# Frigidaire washer lid switch and lid lock repair

### The top-loader's oldest failure, and it is mechanical

A machine that fills and then does nothing is nine times out of ten this switch, and on the older top-loaders under this badge it is a lever and a plunger rather than anything electronic. They wear where the lid strikes them, thousands of times, and the failure is gradual: first it needs the lid pressed a little harder, then it works only sometimes, then not at all. On the newer lid-lock machines the same complaint has a different cause and both are worth telling apart before a part is ordered.

What this involves

Fills but will not spin, on a top-loader, points here before the motor

A small mechanical switch in a wet place — ordinary wear on an older machine

The strike on the lid matters as much as the switch in the frame

Test the switch with the lid closed

Continuity at the switch itself rather than at the board, so the harness is included in the test.

Check the strike and the lid alignment

A bent or missing strike leaves a perfectly good switch unpressed.

Inspect the harness where it enters the cabinet

Corrosion at the connector is common on machines that live in a humid utility room.

Fit and verify both functions

Agitate and spin, because on some designs the switch gates one and not the other.

Explain the safety point

Bypassing a lid switch is a way to make a spinning drum reachable, and we will not leave a machine that way.

### Can I bypass the lid switch to finish a load?

You can, and we would rather you did not. That switch is what stops a drum spinning at high speed with the lid open, and a bypassed machine in a laundry closet where children reach is a poor trade for one load of washing.

### It agitates but will not spin. Same switch?

Often, because on many of these the switch permits the spin and not the agitation, so a worn one gives exactly that half-working machine. The drive coupling and the lid lock give the same picture, which is why it is measured rather than assumed.
