### What to do in the next ten minutes

Dry the floor completely, put a sheet of paper under the front edge and run a short cycle with the kitchen light on the floor so you can see the first drop. Note when it appears — fill, wash, or drain. If the water is coming from behind, turn off the supply valve under the sink and leave the machine alone until it has been looked at.

### The leak you cannot see is the expensive one

A dishwasher sits in a run of cabinets on a floor that is usually laminate, engineered wood or tile on board. A supply fitting weeping a few drops an hour puts nothing on the kitchen floor for months while it soaks the cabinet base and the substrate underneath. By the time it shows, the repair is joinery rather than appliance work. That is why we ask people to feel behind and beside the machine rather than only look at the floor in front of it.

### Why timing matters more than the puddle

A leak during fill is the inlet valve or its connection. A leak during wash is the door, the seal or the tub. A leak during drain is the pump, its clamp, or a standpipe backing up. Same puddle, three different visits — so one watched cycle before the call is worth more than any description of how much water there was.

The door seal or the vent

Water at the front, usually mid-cycle. A hardened gasket, a warped door or a vent that leaks under pressure.

The supply or drain connection

Water at the back, slow and quiet. This is the one that goes into the cabinet base and the flooring rather than on to the floor where you would see it.

The sump, the pump seal or an overfill

Water underneath, or only during one part of the cycle. An overfilling machine leaks from wherever it can, which sends people looking in the wrong place.

Feel the cabinet base next to the machine

Soft or swollen chipboard means this has been going on for a while.

Look at how square the door sits

A machine pushed out of level in its opening leaks at one corner only.

Water on the floor, or a damp cabinet next to the machine

A slow leak at the back damages the cabinet long before it reaches the floor

### It leaks only sometimes.

Then it is probably load-dependent — a heavy load raises the water level, or a tall item holds the door a fraction open. Note what was in it when it happened.

### Is it safe to keep using?

Not really. Even a small leak into a cabinet base does damage that costs more than the repair, and a machine leaking at the back can be doing that unseen.
