# Frigidaire dishwasher not cleaning

### What to do in the next ten minutes

Pull the lower spray arm off — most of them lift or unscrew by hand — and hold it up to the light to see whether the holes are clear. Do the same with the upper arm. Rinse the filter. Then run a short cycle empty with a cup of white vinegar on the top rack and see whether anything changes; that one test separates scale from mechanics.

### Loading is a real cause, and saying so is not a brush-off

These machines are designed around a water path, and a roasting tin laid flat across the lower rack blocks it the way a hand over a hose does. So do tall items that foul the upper arm as it sweeps. When we find that on a visit we show you rather than tell you — it takes one cycle to demonstrate and it is the difference between a machine that disappoints and one that does not.

### Hard water, and what actually helps

South Florida water leaves scale on the arms, the heater and the glassware. Rinse aid genuinely helps, more than most owners believe, because it changes how the water sheets off rather than beading — and beaded water is what dries into a spot. A periodic empty cycle with a dishwasher cleaner does the rest. Neither is a service we sell; both are worth more than most things that are.

The spray arms are blocked

Scale and food in the jets. The arm still turns and still sprays, and the parts of the rack it can no longer reach come out dirty.

The filter is loaded

Water is recirculated through what it collected last time. This is the commonest single cause and the cheapest to correct.

The inlet water is arriving cold

A machine fed from a long cold run heats what it gets, and a short cycle then cannot reach temperature. Nothing is broken and the dishes are still wrong.

Hold the arms up to the light

Blocked jets are visible in five seconds.

Rinse the filter and look at it

What comes out of it explains what went back on to the dishes.

Check the detergent cup opens

A tall plate in front of it keeps it shut, and the load washes in water alone.

Dishes come out gritty, filmed or still dirty

What it usually means

Blocked arms clean part of the load perfectly, which is why it looks like loading

A filter unwashed for a year recirculates what it caught

Film that wipes off is scale; film that does not is etching, and only one has a repair

### Should I pre-rinse everything?

Scrape, do not rinse. These machines need something for the detergent to work on, and a completely pre-rinsed load actually washes worse. What matters is that solids do not reach the filter.

### The glasses have gone permanently cloudy.

If it does not come off with vinegar, that is etching and it is not reversible — it comes from soft water and too much detergent rather than from a failure in the machine.
