# Frigidaire induction zone turns itself off

### What to do in the next ten minutes

Test with a pan you know works — a magnet should stick firmly to its base — and try it on another zone. Then listen: these hobs run a fan, and if you cannot hear one when the zone is working hard, that is worth telling us. Clear anything sitting over the vents, which on many of these are at the back or underneath.

### Why induction is fussy about pans and radiant is not

An induction zone works by inducing a current in the base of the pan, so the pan is part of the circuit — if it is not ferrous, or if it covers too little of the coil, there is nothing for the hob to heat and it reports that as an error. A warped base that touches the glass at the rim and not the center does the same thing intermittently, which is the version that gets reported as a failure in the appliance.

### The cooling nobody thinks about

A radiant hob puts its heat into the pan and the glass. An induction hob puts a real amount of it into the electronics under the glass, which is why there is a fan and why the installation instructions insist on clearance. Fitted tightly over a drawer full of tea towels, or with its vent against a rail, an induction hob will cut zones out under load — and everything inside it will test perfectly.

The pan is not being seen

Non-ferrous, warped, or too small for the zone. The hob beeps and shuts down, exactly as designed.

The hob is overheating

A blocked vent, a failed cooling fan, or a hob installed with no clearance beneath. Zones cut out after a few minutes of hard use and come back when it cools.

A coil or the power board

One zone permanently gone, or the whole hob dropping out. This is the genuine failure and it is the minority of these calls.

Magnet test on the pan base

If it does not stick firmly, the hob is right and the pan is wrong.

Try the same pan on another zone

Listen for the fan

Silence under load points at cooling, which is the cheaper answer.

It beeps, or a zone stops working part way through cooking

Normal. Multi-ply bases vibrate at the frequencies these hobs use, and a heavier pan is usually quieter. It is not a failure.
