# Frigidaire oven door locked shut

### What to do in the next ten minutes

Give it time: some ovens hold the lock for up to an hour after the cycle ends, and a warm cavity is a locked cavity by design. If it is cold and still locked, switch the oven off at the breaker for five minutes and restore it — that resets the control and releases a good share of them. Do not pull on the handle.

### Why the door locks at all

A self-clean cycle takes the cavity to around 900°F, which is hot enough to be genuinely dangerous, so the door is held shut mechanically until the control is satisfied it has cooled. Everything about this complaint follows from that: the lock is obeying a temperature reading, and if the reading is wrong the door stays shut with nothing mechanically broken.

### Our honest advice about self-clean

On an oven more than a few years old we usually suggest not using it. The cycle bakes the door seal hard, cooks the temperature sensor and the control it reports to, and is the single commonest reason an older oven that was working perfectly arrives at us dead the next morning. A cavity cleaner and half an hour with a cloth is duller and it does not cost you an oven.

The temperature sensor is reading high

The control believes the cavity is still hot and holds the lock. The commonest cause and the least expected.

The lock motor or its switches

The motor runs and the cam does not move, or moves and never reports. Ordinary parts and a straightforward job.

The control lost its place

A power interruption during a clean cycle can leave the machine in a state it will not come out of. A power-down usually clears it.

Wait for it to be genuinely cold

An hour is normal on some models.

Power it down for five minutes

At the breaker, then restore. This releases many of them.

Do not lever the door

The single most expensive thing that can be done to it.

It went into a clean cycle and never let go

What it usually means

The lock is waiting for a temperature, and it may be reading the wrong one

Forcing the door costs hinges and a lock assembly

Self-clean cycles are hard on these ovens, and we say so

### Is there a manual release?

On some models, behind the front frame or under the top panel — and reaching it means partly dismantling the machine, which is why it is a visit rather than a tip.

### It is locked and it was not on a clean cycle.

Then the lock motor or its switch has moved on its own, or the control thinks it is in a cycle. A power-down is worth trying before booking.
