# Frigidaire oven temperature is wrong

### What to do in the next ten minutes

Put a thermometer on the middle shelf, set 350°F and read it three times over half an hour once it has settled. Write down all three. If the average is more than about 25°F out, there is something to correct; if it swings widely but averages right, that is the thermostat cycling and it is normal.

### What ‘accurate’ means in an oven

A domestic oven holds temperature by switching the element on and off, so the cavity is always either climbing or falling — a swing of 20 to 30°F either side of the setting is normal and is what every oven of this class does. What matters is where the middle of that swing sits. This is why we ask for three readings: one tells you where in the cycle you looked, three tell you what the oven is actually doing.

### When the oven is right and the kitchen is wrong

Baking complaints after a new oven is fitted are usually the oven being closer to its setting than the old one was, not further from it. Twenty years of adjusting a recipe to a cool oven produces a recipe that burns in an accurate one. We measure before we adjust, and where the cavity is within tolerance we say so — an offset applied to a correct oven just moves the problem.

The sensor has drifted

A resistance that no longer matches the table for that model. The oven is obeying a wrong number faithfully.

The calibration needs an offset

These ovens can be adjusted in software, and a small consistent error is corrected that way rather than with a part.

Heat is escaping at the door

A hardened gasket or a hinge that has dropped. The cavity never settles and the top of the oven runs cooler than the bottom.

Three readings, not one

A single reading catches the thermostat mid-swing and proves nothing.

Check the door seal for light

With the kitchen dark and the oven light on, a leak shows as a line.

Try a second thermometer

Cheap dial thermometers are often 15°F out themselves.

Cakes sink, edges burn, everything takes longer than the recipe

What it usually means

A cavity swings by design; the question is where the middle of the swing sits

A drifting sensor is a part; a small consistent error is a calibration offset

A door that leaks heat produces exactly this with nothing electrical wrong

### Can you calibrate it to match my old oven?

We can apply an offset, yes, within the range the control allows. It is a legitimate answer when the hardware is sound and the results are consistently off.

### One side of the tray always browns more.

That is usually the cavity's air pattern rather than a failure, and rotating the tray halfway is the standard answer. Where it is severe, the fan or the element is worth measuring.
