Symptom

Frigidaire dryer not heating

The first thing to establish is whether the machine is failing to make heat or failing to move air, because in South Florida the second is far more common — and no part fitted will fix a duct. Where it is genuinely heat, an electric machine and a gas machine are two different repairs, so knowing which you have shortens the visit.

Three ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

    Feel the outside vent

Strong and warm, or weak and cool. That is the fork in the road.

  2. 02

Check both halves of the breaker

It is free and it explains a share of these calls entirely.

  3. 03

Look at the lint screen and the housing below it

A screen that is clean and a housing full of lint is a common combination.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “Airflow is the commoner answer here, and it is not a part”
  • “An electric dryer running on one leg of its supply tumbles cold with a perfect element”
  • “A thermal cutout that has opened is a symptom: it opened for a reason”
A bright kitchen window over a sink with hard Florida sunlight falling in and palm fronds and a pale stucco wall outside.

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

If there is no code at all

About Frigidaire dryer not heating

What to do in the next ten minutes

Clean the lint screen, then go outside and put your hand at the vent while the machine runs. Strong warm air means the duct is clear and the problem is heat; weak or cool air means the duct is the job. Check the breaker as well — on an electric dryer, one of the two legs tripping leaves the drum turning and the heat gone.

Why the duct comes first here

Ducting in South Florida buildings runs further than the manual assumes — through a wall into a corridor, or up a riser shared with other apartments — and nobody cleans it. A dryer that cannot exhaust recycles moist air, the clothes stay damp, the cabinet gets hot, and eventually a safety device opens and the heat stops altogether. Fitting an element to that machine gives you a working dryer for a few weeks and then the same call.

What an open cutout is telling you

A thermal cutout is a one-time fuse that protects the machine from overheating. When we find one open, the useful question is not which part to fit but why it got that hot — and the answer is almost always airflow. Replacing the cutout alone is the classic false economy on this appliance: the new one opens too, because the reason is still in the duct.

Questions about Frigidaire dryer not heating

It heats for a while and then stops.

Classic restricted airflow: the machine reaches its limit and shuts the heat off, then cools and starts again. The duct is where to look.

The dryer is new and it does this.

Then look at the installation. A new machine on an old duct, or one connected with foil concertina hose behind it, will do exactly this from day one.
