The cooktop shuts a zone off part way through cooking. Is that overheating?
That is where it points, and the cause is usually airflow rather than the electronics. These have a fan and an intake underneath, and a drawer packed to the top beneath the cooktop is enough to block it.
My pan works on one zone but not another. Is a zone dead?
Not necessarily. Zones differ in diameter and minimum pan size, so a small pan that a large zone cannot detect will work perfectly on the smaller one next to it — that is detection, not failure.
