Symptom

Frigidaire dishwasher not drying

Worth knowing before you book: Frigidaire's plainer dishwashers dry by holding the heat of the final rinse rather than by blowing air, so plastics coming out damp is close to normal and no repair will change it. Where china and glass are also wet, the heater, the vent flap or the rinse aid dispenser is genuinely at issue.

Three ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

Fill the rinse aid and run one cycle

The cheapest test on this page and it settles a good share of them.

  2. 02

Feel the tub the moment it finishes

Hot and wet is a venting story; cool and wet is a heating one.

  3. 03

Note whether plastics only are wet

That is the design answer rather than the repair answer.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “Damp plastic on the plainer machines is the design, not a failure”
  • “Rinse aid changes drying more than any setting on the panel”
  • “Wet china as well as wet plastic is the version worth a visit”
A bright South Florida garage with a white upright freezer against a pale stucco wall, a roller door open onto a driveway and palms, concrete floor.

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

If there is no code at all

About Frigidaire dishwasher not drying

What to do in the next ten minutes

Check the rinse aid reservoir and fill it — this is the single commonest answer and it is free. Then run a normal cycle and open the door as soon as it finishes: if the tub is hot and steamy, the machine made heat and the moisture had nowhere to go, which points at the vent rather than the heater.

Condensation drying, explained once

Machines that do not have a fan rely on the load being hot at the end of the rinse: water evaporates from hot china and condenses on the cooler stainless tub wall, where it runs down and drains away. Plastic has almost no thermal mass, so it cools before its water evaporates and stays wet. That is physics rather than a defect, and it is why the same machine dries a plate perfectly and a storage box badly.

Why rinse aid does what a hotter cycle cannot

Rinse aid lowers the surface tension of the water so it sheets off surfaces instead of beading on them. Less water on the load at the end of the rinse means less to evaporate and fewer spots where it dries. On a condensation-dry machine it is not an optional extra — it is part of how the drying works, and running without it produces exactly this complaint on a mechanically perfect appliance.

Questions about Frigidaire dishwasher not drying

I use all-in-one tablets. Do I still need rinse aid?

On these machines, yes, and it is the commonest cause we find. The rinse aid in a tablet is released with the wash, not at the final rinse where it is needed.

Can the drying be improved another way?

Opening the door a couple of inches as soon as the cycle ends lets the steam out and dries the load in minutes. It is not elegant and it works.
