Symptom

Frigidaire wine cooler not holding temperature

Almost every one of these calls is thermal rather than mechanical. These are single-zone cabinets with a glass door and a small compressor, and in a South Florida kitchen at 80°F they are fighting the room all day. Before a part is quoted we want to know two things: what it holds overnight, and whether the cabinet has anywhere to send its heat.

Three ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

    Two readings, night and afternoon

The pattern separates the room from the machine.

  2. 02

Look for a grille and a gap

Installation is the answer often enough to check it first.

  3. 03

    Paper test on the door

All round, and especially at the hinge corner of a glass door.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “Holding overnight but drifting in the afternoon is the room, not the machine”
  • “A cabinet built flush into a run with no grille is recirculating its own heat”
  • “Glass doors gain heat, and a full rack can hold one open by a fraction”

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

If there is no code at all

The data plate is inside the cabinet, upper left wall or behind the grille. All models

About Frigidaire wine cooler not holding temperature

What to do in the next ten minutes

Note the temperature last thing at night and again at four in the afternoon; the difference is the diagnosis. Then look at how the cabinet is installed — is there a vent grille at the front, and is there any gap at the back? A unit pushed into a cabinet opening with no airflow will do this with nothing whatever wrong inside it.

Why installation is the first question

These cabinets move heat from inside to outside, and they need somewhere to put it. Built-in models vent forward through a grille at the base; freestanding ones vent at the back and need a gap. Fitting a freestanding cabinet flush into a cabinet run is a common and understandable mistake, and it produces exactly this complaint — the machine runs continuously, the compartment sits a few degrees high, and every part inside tests perfectly.

What temperature these cabinets can actually hold

A single-zone beverage cabinet in a room at 80°F will typically hold in the mid-forties Fahrenheit, and the specification assumes an ambient rather cooler than a Miami kitchen in August. Where somebody is trying to hold cellar temperature for long-term storage, the honest answer is sometimes that the cabinet is not the wrong one but the room is — and that is a conversation worth having before money is spent on parts.

Questions about Frigidaire wine cooler not holding temperature

It is noisier than it used to be.

Often the fan, and on these small cabinets a fan is inexpensive. It is also what happens when a condenser is blocked and everything has to work harder.

Is condensation on the glass a failure?

A little, in this climate, is ordinary. Persistent condensation points at the door seal or a cabinet set colder than it needs to be.
