What to do in the next ten minutes
Put a thermometer in the fresh-food section and another in the freezer, write down what they say now and again in an hour, and look at the back wall inside the fridge for a shelf pushed against the vent. Do not empty the cabinet yet and do not switch it off at the breaker — a machine that has been off for a day tells us less, not more, and food that has stayed at 45°F is a different decision from food that has been at 60°F overnight.
Why we ask for numbers rather than for a description
These cabinets publish very little. There is no code to read on a plain top-freezer and not much more on a side-by-side, so the diagnosis is built out of measurements: what each compartment is holding, how long the compressor runs, what the air does at the vents. Two thermometer readings an hour apart tell us whether we are coming to an air problem, a defrost problem or a sealed system, and those are three different visits with three different sets of parts on the van.
