What to do in the next ten minutes
Look at where the frost actually is and take a photograph before you touch it — that picture is genuinely useful to us. Do not attack it with anything sharp: the aluminum tubing behind that back wall is thin, and a screwdriver through it turns a defrost repair into a sealed system repair. Check whether anything is stopping the door closing fully while you are there.
Reading the pattern
Frost tells a story if you look at it before you clear it. An even sheet across the evaporator behind the back wall means the defrost heater has not been running at all. A band of ice at the top with clear metal below means it ran, but not for long enough. Frost concentrated at one corner of the door means air is getting in there and the seal or the hinge is the job. This is why the photograph is worth taking: once the cabinet has been defrosted by hand, the evidence has gone with it.
What defrosting it yourself does and does not do
Emptying the cabinet and leaving it open overnight will clear the ice and the machine will work properly for a few days or a few weeks. That is worth knowing — it is a legitimate way to save the food while a visit is arranged. What it does not do is fix anything, and the interval before it comes back is roughly how bad the underlying problem is.
