- “A cold freezer proves the compressor and the refrigerant are doing their job”
- “The problem is air: fan, damper, duct or a coil under frost”
- “This is usually the cheaper half of the refrigeration repair list”
Symptom
Frigidaire fridge warm, freezer cold
This is the single most useful thing an owner can tell us about a refrigerator, because it rules out most of the expensive answers immediately. Almost every cabinet this badge sells makes its cold in one place and moves air to the other, so a cold freezer proves the sealed system is working and points the whole diagnosis at air: a fan, a damper, a duct or a coil under ice.

Three ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
The evaporator fan has stopped
No air moves out of the freezer into the fridge section. Often it announces itself first as a chirp or a rattle that comes and goes with the door.
Evaporator fan repair from $149 -
The duct or damper is blocked or stuck
The path between the two compartments closes, usually with frost. The freezer gets colder than it should while the fridge climbs.
Defrost system repair from $159 -
The coil is iced over
The fan is running and pushing air through a block of ice, which is the same as pushing it through a wall.

01
Listen for the fan with the door switch held
A freezer fan runs with the door shut; holding the switch is how you hear it.
-
02
Feel for air at the fresh-food vents
Air arriving but not cold, versus no air at all, splits the diagnosis in two.
-
03
Check the freezer is not too cold
A freezer running much below its setting while the fridge is warm is the classic damper or duct pattern.

About Frigidaire fridge warm, freezer cold
What to do in the next ten minutes
Open the freezer, hold the door switch in if there is one, and listen for the fan. Then feel for air at the vents inside the fresh-food section — most of these cabinets blow into the top or the back wall. Air but no cold is a different answer from no air at all, and either is worth telling us when you book.
Why one sealed system serves two compartments
On almost every Frigidaire cabinet the cold is made in one evaporator, usually behind the freezer's back wall, and a fan pushes some of that air through a duct into the fresh-food section. It is a cheap and reliable arrangement, and it has one consequence worth knowing: anything that interrupts the airflow starves the fridge while leaving the freezer alone or even making it colder. That is why this particular complaint is good news relative to the alternatives.
What it is almost never
It is almost never a refrigerant problem, because a cabinet short of refrigerant loses the freezer first, not last. It is almost never the thermostat in the fridge section, because that controls the damper rather than the compressor. Ruling those two out on the phone is why this page asks you to check the freezer temperature before anything else.

Questions about Frigidaire fridge warm, freezer cold
Can I use the freezer while I wait?
Yes, and the cabinet will usually keep the freezer at temperature until the visit. Move anything perishable out of the fresh-food side.
The freezer seems colder than usual, actually.
That is a real clue and it points at the damper or the duct: the cold that should be going to the fridge is staying where it was made.
