Put a thermometer between the packages rather than in the air, and read it in an hour — the air temperature in a freezer swings and the load temperature does not. Then put your hand on the outside of the cabinet at the back or the sides: a warm skin means the condenser is working, and a cold one on a cabinet that is not freezing is a different story.
Why a freezer fails quietly
A refrigerator tells you it is in trouble because you open it several times a day and the milk is warm. A freezer is opened once a week and everything inside it is already solid, so a cabinet holding at 15°F instead of 0°F looks perfect for a fortnight — right up until the ice cream is soft and the meat has re-frozen with crystals through it.
