Symptom

Frigidaire freezer not freezing

The expensive failure, because nothing announces it. A freezer that has drifted from 0°F to 20°F looks and sounds exactly like one that is working, and the first sign is usually the food. In South Florida there is an extra suspect that is not the machine's doing at all: a cabinet in a garage is being asked to work at an ambient it was never rated for.

Three ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

  • The condenser is choked or the room is too hot

Garage dust on the coil, or an ambient in the nineties. The machine runs continuously and still loses, and this is the cheapest of the three answers.

  • The defrost circuit has failed on an upright

A frost-free upright ices its coil until air stops moving. The cabinet hums, the light works, and the temperature climbs slowly.

    Defrost system repair from $159
  • The seal or the lid is not closing

On a chest freezer especially: a hinge that no longer pulls the lid down, or a gasket that has hardened, keeps the cabinet fighting the room all day.

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

Measure in the load, not in the air

Between two packages, an hour later. This is the reading that means something.

  2. 02

    Check the room temperature too

It belongs in the diagnosis, and on a garage cabinet it is sometimes the whole of it.

  3. 03

Look at the coil and the clearance

Dust across the condenser, or a cabinet pushed against a wall with nowhere to vent.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “Nothing tells you until the food does — a thermometer is the whole early warning system”
  • “A garage in August is not the room the cabinet was designed for”
  • “Upright and chest freezers fail in different places, so say which you have”
A bright South Florida condominium kitchen seen wide and empty: white builder cabinets, pale quartz counters, a stainless range and refrigerator, a light tile floor, and a window with hard sunlight and palm fronds beyond.

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

If there is no code at all

About Frigidaire freezer not freezing

What to do in the next ten minutes

Put a thermometer between the packages rather than in the air, and read it in an hour — the air temperature in a freezer swings and the load temperature does not. Then put your hand on the outside of the cabinet at the back or the sides: a warm skin means the condenser is working, and a cold one on a cabinet that is not freezing is a different story.

Why a freezer fails quietly

A refrigerator tells you it is in trouble because you open it several times a day and the milk is warm. A freezer is opened once a week and everything inside it is already solid, so a cabinet holding at 15°F instead of 0°F looks perfect for a fortnight — right up until the ice cream is soft and the meat has re-frozen with crystals through it. A five-dollar thermometer with a memory is the cheapest insurance in the kitchen, and we say so on every one of these calls.

The garage problem, stated plainly

Most standalone freezers in South Florida live in a garage or a utility room. Manufacturers rate these cabinets for a room, and a closed garage in August is not one — a compressor that would cycle for a third of the day is running for most of it, and the condenser is breathing dust while it does. Sometimes the honest answer to this call is not a part at all: clear the coil, give the cabinet room to breathe, and expect it to work harder here than the label implies.

Questions about Frigidaire freezer not freezing

The food thawed. Is it safe?

That is a food safety question rather than an appliance one, and the honest answer is that it depends on how long and how warm. Anything that reached refrigerator temperature and stayed there for hours should be treated as refrigerated food, not frozen.

Is a chest freezer worth repairing?

A thermostat, a seal or a lid hinge, yes. A sealed-system repair on a chest freezer is often more than the cabinet is worth, and we will tell you that before the work rather than after.
