- “The filter trap on a front-loader is the first place to look and most owners have never opened it”
- “A pump that hums and moves nothing is blocked rather than dead”
- “In a condominium a surcharging stack puts the water back and the machine is innocent”
Symptom
Frigidaire washer will not drain
On the older machines that fill South Florida closets this is usually an obstruction rather than a failure, and on a front-loader there is a filter trap behind the lower panel that almost nobody has ever opened. Coins, hairpins, a child's sock: they clear the drum and stop at the pump. The other half of the answer is not in the machine at all — the hose, the standpipe, and in an apartment the stack it shares with the flat above.

Three ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
Something solid at the pump
It hums, nothing moves, and the water stays. This is the commonest single answer on an older machine and the cheapest.
Washer drain pump replacement from $165 -
The hose or the standpipe
Folded behind the machine after it was last pushed back, or a building drain that cannot take the flow. The pump is working perfectly against something it cannot beat.
Washer leak repair from $145 -
The pump has failed
Silence where there should be a pump running. Third on the list rather than first, and it is a part.
Washer drain pump replacement from $165
In five minutes
Before you call anybody
None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

01
Listen at the drain moment
Hum with no flow, or silence. Two different repairs.
-
02
Open the filter trap
With a tray. What comes out of it usually settles the question.
-
03
Check the standpipe
Water backing up out of it during drain is the building, not the washer.
How it shows up
What people describe when they call
A shortcut
Narrow it down before anybody arrives
A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

About Frigidaire washer will not drain
What to do in the next ten minutes
Switch the machine off and put a shallow tray and towels down before you open anything — a full drum holds several gallons and the filter trap releases all of it. On a front-loader the trap is behind the panel at the bottom right; open it slowly. Look at the drain hose behind the machine for a kink or a crush while you are there.
Why the trap is the first move
Front-load machines put a filter between the drum and the pump precisely so that a coin does not reach the impeller — and then hide it behind a panel that owners are never shown. On a machine ten years into its life in a family home, the trap has caught a great deal, and opening it is a two-minute job that ends a large share of these calls. Everything past it is a real repair; this is not.
The condominium version of this complaint
In an apartment the washer's drain hose goes into a standpipe that joins a riser shared with other units. When that riser is restricted, water comes back up during the spin drain — sometimes on to the floor, sometimes just slowly enough that the machine times out and reports a drain problem. It is worth knowing before a pump is replaced, and it is the reason we ask where the machine lives.

Questions about Frigidaire washer will not drain
Can I bail it out and run it again?
Bail it out, yes — you do not want gray water standing in a warm laundry closet overnight. Running the same cycle again on top of whatever stopped it just asks the pump to fight it twice.
The door will not open on the front-loader.
It will not while there is water above the door line, and that is the machine being right. Draining it through the filter trap is what releases the lock.
