- “Top-loaders: the lid switch is one of the most common failures on an older machine”
- “Front-loaders: the door lock has to report closed before anything spins”
- “A machine that tries and aborts is a balance story, not an electrical one”
Symptom
Frigidaire washer will not spin
Two quite different machines wear this complaint. On a top-loader it is usually the lid switch or the drive; on a front-loader it is the door lock, the belt or a load the machine has decided it cannot balance. The useful thing you can tell us is whether the drum turns freely by hand and whether the machine tried and gave up or never tried at all.

Three ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
The lid switch or the door lock
The machine will not spin a drum it cannot prove is closed. On a top-loader the switch is a small mechanical part in a wet place; on a front-loader the lock is an interlock with a harness that flexes every time the door opens.

It cannot balance the load
It tries, thumps, slows and gives up. Usually the load or the level, sometimes the suspension, and on an older front-loader sometimes the bearings.

The belt or the drive
The motor runs and the drum does not, or turns only in one direction. On the belt-driven machines this is ordinary; on direct-drive it is a bigger conversation.

Turn the drum by hand
Free means drive or control; stiff or gritty means bearings.

02
Redistribute and retry
One heavy item is the commonest free explanation there is.

03
Check the machine is level
A washer rocking on an uneven floor aborts spins with nothing wrong inside it.

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

About Frigidaire washer will not spin
What to do in the next ten minutes
Open the door and turn the drum by hand: free, stiff or gritty. Redistribute the load — a single heavy item like a bath mat defeats every balance system there is — and try a spin-only cycle. Note whether the machine attempts the spin and stops, or never begins.
Why a refusal to spin is often the machine being sensible
Modern washers measure the drum's balance before they commit to a high-speed spin, and they will re-distribute, retry and finally give up rather than damage themselves. A machine that ends a cycle with a soaked load and no error has usually done exactly that. So the first questions are about the load, the floor and the level — and about half of these calls end there, which is why we ask them on the phone rather than in your kitchen.
The noise that changes the estimate
If the drum rumbles as it comes up to speed and the sound rises with it, the bearings are the reason it cannot spin. On many front-loaders the outer tub is sold as a sealed assembly, which makes that the dearest repair on the laundry list and often more than an older machine is worth. We would rather establish that on the phone than after arriving.

Before you book
Questions about Frigidaire washer will not spin
It spins on empty but not with a load.
That is either balance or a slipping belt — a glazed belt drives an empty drum perfectly and gives up under weight.
The clothes are wetter than they used to be.
A spin that completes at a lower speed than it should. Worth booking before it stops entirely: it usually means the machine is compensating for something.
