Symptom

Frigidaire dryer takes two or three cycles

This is the same complaint as no heat, one step earlier, and it has the same answer nine times out of ten: air. A duct with lint in it, a vent flap that no longer opens fully, a screen that is clean but a housing that is not. The genuine machine failures — a moisture sensor coated with softener, a partly failed element — are the rest.

Three ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

    Timed cycle versus automatic

If timed works and automatic does not, it is the sensor.

  2. 02

    Watch the outside flap

It should open visibly when the machine runs.

  3. 03

    Try a smaller load

A dryer packed to the door cannot tumble, and cannot dry.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “Nine out of ten are airflow, and airflow is not a part”
  • “A moisture sensor coated with fabric softener ends the cycle early, every time”
  • “Overloading is real: a dryer needs room to tumble”
The lit interior of a clean, nearly empty white refrigerator seen straight on with its door open, glass shelves and clear drawers.

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

About Frigidaire dryer takes two or three cycles

What to do in the next ten minutes

Run the machine on a timed cycle rather than an automatic one and see whether it dries properly. If it does, the sensor is the story rather than the heat. Then check the outside vent flap actually opens when the dryer runs — a flap stuck shut with lint or paint undoes everything else.

The cost of a long cycle

A dryer that takes three hours instead of one is using three times the electricity and putting three times the heat and moisture into the apartment — which the air conditioning then has to remove. In this climate that is not a small number over a year, and it is why cleaning a vent is one of the few appliance jobs that pays for itself.

The five-minute test worth doing before you call

Run the machine empty on high heat for five minutes and then feel the exhaust outside. Strong, hot air means the machine and the duct are fine and the problem is the load or the sensor. Weak air means the duct, whatever the machine is doing. It costs nothing, it takes five minutes, and it decides which half of this page you are on.

Questions about Frigidaire dryer takes two or three cycles

Would a new dryer fix it?

If the duct is the problem, no — the new one will be slow too. That is worth knowing before buying rather than after.

How often should the vent be cleaned here?

Annually for a house, and more often for an apartment with a long or shared run. Households that dry every day should treat it as a yearly item.
