What an Appliance Repair Service Call Costs in South Florida, and What It Buys

On this badge the diagnostic visit is from $89 and it is credited toward the repair when the work goes ahead. What it buys is a technician at your machine, a diagnosis rather than a guess, and the scope and the figure in writing before anything is opened — including the cases where the honest answer is that the appliance is not worth repairing, which you have then paid for rather than been sold a part. Three different arrangements circulate in this trade and they are worth telling apart before agreeing to any of them: a diagnostic fee that is credited to the repair, a trip charge that is not credited and covers only the travel, and a fixed figure quoted over the phone from a description. The third is the one to be careful of, because a figure named before anybody has measured anything is a figure that has to move later.

The full guide

The cost of an appliance repair service call is a question with three different answers in this trade, and knowing which one you are being offered is worth more than the number.

What a service call fee is, and the three ways the same money gets arranged Top: a trip charge pays for getting a technician and a stocked van to the address; a diagnostic fee pays for finding out what is wrong; service call fee is used to mean either or both, so it is worth asking which. Below: three bars of identical total width. With a stated fee credited toward the repair, the visit and the repair are two visible numbers. With no diagnostic fee, the total is the same and the visit is inside the repair price. With a fee that is free only if you go ahead, it is a fee with an incentive attached. One question settles all three: if I decline the repair, what do I owe you. THREE NAMES, TWO DIFFERENT THINGS TRIP CHARGE getting a van here DIAGNOSTIC FEE finding out what is wrong SERVICE CALL FEE means either — or both. Ask which. THE SAME MONEY, ARRANGED THREE WAYS STATED FEE, CREDITED two numbers, both visible THE VISIT THE REPAIR “NO DIAGNOSTIC FEE” one number — the visit is inside it THE REPAIR — WITH THE VISIT IN IT FREE IF YOU GO AHEAD a fee, with an incentive attached to the diagnosis THE VISIT THE REPAIR free if you go ahead · charged if you decline all three bars are the same total — that is the point “If I decline, what do I owe you?” one question settles all three · ask before you book
A free diagnostic is not less money — it is the same money with one of the two numbers folded into the other. That is legitimate, and it is why comparing quotes on the headline figure does not work.

Cost of appliance repair service call: the three arrangements

A diagnostic fee, credited to the repair. You pay for a technician to come and establish what is wrong. If the work goes ahead, that fee comes off the total. This is what we do, and on this badge it is from $89.

A trip charge, not credited. A smaller figure that covers travel and nothing else. The diagnosis is charged separately, or the quote comes afterwards with the trip charge already spent. Not dishonest, but it is a different arithmetic from the first one and it is worth asking which you are being offered.

A figure quoted over the phone. Somebody names a price from a description of the symptom. It sounds like certainty and it is the opposite: the part, the access and what the appliance has already done to itself all move the figure, and none of that is knowable from a phone call. A number given before the facts has to move later, and it usually moves upward.

What the fee actually buys

Not a visit. A decision.

A technician at your machine, with the model and serial read off the plate rather than guessed at. Measurement rather than inference — a meter on the terminals, a thermometer in the cabinet, the panel read before anything is cleared. And then the scope and the figure in writing before anything is opened.

That last part is the point. What you are buying is the ability to say yes or no to a specific piece of work at a specific price, instead of authorising an unknown amount of labor and finding out afterwards.

Including when the answer is no

It is charged even when nothing needs repairing, and that is worth stating plainly rather than in small print.

A control lock engaged. A dishwasher drying by condensation and working exactly as designed. A washer that stopped with a wet load because its balance logic overruled it, correctly, on a single comforter. A cabinet in Sabbath mode with the lights off.

All of those look like failures and none of them is one. We would rather talk you out of the visit on the phone first — which is why every symptom page on this site opens with the checks that cost nothing — but where the visit has happened, the answer is still an answer and it is still charged.

The same applies at the other end: where the arithmetic says a machine is finished, you have paid for that conclusion rather than for a part you were about to waste money on.

Why the figure is lower on this badge

We publish a lower diagnostic here than on most of the makes we work on, and the reason is not the hour.

It is the parts channel. This is the volume brand of its group, and its common components — pump, valve, element, lid switch, fan motor, thermostat — are stocked rather than ordered. The consequence is that the visit which finds the problem is frequently the visit that fixes it.

On a make whose parts arrive in three weeks, the first trip has to carry the cost of a second one. Here it usually does not, and that shows up in the figure.

What moves the cost of the repair itself

Three things, and none of them can be judged over the phone.

The machine. How old it is, which version of a part the serial calls for, and whether one failure has taken another with it. On this badge we open appliances from two years old to twenty.

The access. A garage freezer, a stacked laundry center in a closet or a built-in wall oven takes longer to reach than a range that pulls forward. In a condominium there may be a service elevator to book and a certificate of insurance to file with the association, and that is part of the hour too.

Whether the panel was cleared before we arrived. A power cycle throws away the one thing that would have narrowed the diagnosis, and the visit then starts from measurement instead of from evidence.

Questions worth asking anyone, including us

Is the fee credited toward the repair, or is it separate?

Will I get the scope and the price in writing before anything is opened?

If the answer is that the machine is not worth fixing, what have I paid for?

Are the common parts for my appliance stocked, or ordered?

Four questions, and the answers to them tell you more about what a repair will actually cost than any single figure quoted in advance.

If it turns out to be a repair

Every job on this site is priced the same way: an on-site diagnostic first, the figure agreed in writing before anybody starts.

  • A multimeter and a small open notebook with a pen lying on a dark quartz counter beside an appliance whose panel is dark, a hand writing.
    from $89

    Diagnostic visit

We find out what is wrong before anybody quotes a part. On this make the first thing established is age, because the badge sells the appliance that came with the apartment and we open machines at every stage of life — a two-year-old range and a fifteen-year-old washer in the same building. The fee comes off the bill when you go ahead with the work, and where the answer is that the repair is not worth doing, you get that answer plainly and it is still the same fee.

    • Age and model first: this badge is repaired at every stage of life
    • The number before the work, in writing, and it is credited toward the repair
    • Where the machine is not worth fixing we say so instead of selling a part

Questions people ask about this

Is the cost of an appliance repair service call charged if I decline the repair?

Yes, and that is the honest arrangement. You are paying for the diagnosis, and a diagnosis that concludes the machine is not worth fixing is a useful answer rather than a wasted visit — it saves you the part and the labor you were about to spend on it.

Why is the fee lower on this brand than on some others?

The parts channel rather than the hour. Pumps, valves, elements, switches and fan motors for this make are stocked rather than ordered, so the visit that finds a problem is frequently the visit that fixes it — the first trip does not have to carry the cost of a second one.
