Unlocking a Frigidaire Dishwasher That Is Ignoring Every Button

Two things about this lock are worth knowing because they are what make it confusing.

It survives a power cut. Cutting the breaker for ten minutes does nothing to it. Everything else in the kitchen resets and the dishwasher does not.

Nobody remembers switching it on. It is engaged by holding a pad, and the usual explanation is a sleeve, a cloth or a forearm crossing the panel while somebody cleaned the front. Children reaching the controls is the other one.

The number that is not a code

If the display shows a number between one and twenty-four and the machine is sitting there doing nothing, that is not a lock and it is not an error. It is delay start, counting down in hours.

The third case looks identical from the kitchen: the panel lights up, the cycle is selected, nothing happens.

Every dishwasher has a switch inside the door latch that has to close before anything is permitted. When it stops making contact reliably, the machine is not refusing — it does not believe the door is shut.

The test is one push. Press the door firmly closed with a hand and try to start it. If it runs, that switch is the repair, and in a builder's kitchen the usual causes are mechanical and cheap: a strike plate knocked out of alignment, a cabinet panel that has shifted, or a spring in the handle that has given up.

The order that saves a visit

  1. Look for the padlock symbol. If it is there, hold the pad.
  2. Read the number, if there is one. Under twenty-five means hours, and cancel clears it.
  3. Push the door and try again. If it starts, it is the latch switch.
  4. Only then cut power for three minutes.

That last one is worth doing last rather than first. A power cut clears a confused control, which is a real condition, but it also throws away whatever was on the display — and on this make there is no service memory to ask for it again.
