Symptom
Frigidaire frost building in the freezer
On a frost-free upright this is a message and on a manual-defrost chest freezer it is housekeeping — so the first question is which cabinet you have. An upright that grows frost has a defrost circuit that has stopped; a chest freezer that grows frost has been opened, or has a lid that is not sealing, and is doing what it was designed to do.

Three ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
The defrost heater or control has failed
On a frost-free upright only. The coil ices, air stops moving, and the cabinet begins to lose temperature after the frost has been growing for a while.
Defrost system repair from $159 -
The lid or door is not sealing
Humid air comes in, meets the coldest surface and freezes there. The rim of frost follows the leak, which is why its position is worth photographing.
Door seal replacement from $129 -
It is a manual-defrost cabinet doing its job
A chest freezer accumulates frost by design and needs defrosting once or twice a year in this climate. That is not a repair and we will say so.

Before you call anybody
None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.
-
01
Find out if it is frost-free
It decides whether this is a failure or a chore.
-
02
Photograph where the frost is
A rim at the lid is a seal; a sheet on the back wall of an upright is the defrost circuit.
-
03
Check the lid closes under its own weight
A chest freezer lid that needs pressing is a hinge, and it frosts every day until it is fixed.

A shortcut
Narrow it down before anybody arrives
A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.
If there is no code at all

About Frigidaire frost building in the freezer
What to do in the next ten minutes
Establish whether the cabinet is frost-free — the label or the manual will say, and a chest freezer almost never is. Look at where the frost is heaviest: an even sheet on the back wall of an upright, or a rim along the lid. If you clear it, use a plastic scraper and warm water and keep metal away from the walls, where the tubing is only just under the surface.
Two cabinets, two different meanings
A frost-free upright melts its own coil several times a day, which is why it never accumulates anything — and why frost on one is always a signal. A chest freezer has no such machinery: it is a well-insulated box with a cold wall, and every time the lid opens in a Florida summer it takes in air carrying water that then freezes on the inside. Frost there is not a failure, it is the appliance being honest about the room.
What frost costs you either way
Ice is a poor conductor, so a coating on the walls or the coil makes the cabinet work harder for the same temperature, and half an inch of it measurably increases running cost. On an upright that is a reason to book the repair; on a chest freezer it is a reason to defrost it before the season rather than after.

Questions about Frigidaire frost building in the freezer
How often should a chest freezer be defrosted here?
Once or twice a year for most households, and sooner if the frost passes about a quarter of an inch. Humidity and how often it is opened decide it more than the calendar does.
Can I use a hairdryer?
We would rather you did not. Warm water in bowls and a plastic scraper are slower and cannot melt the liner or push warm air into places that then re-freeze into the wrong shape.
