Symptom

Frigidaire frost building up inside

A frost-free cabinet is not supposed to accumulate anything, so frost is always a message. Where it is tells us which message: a sheet on the freezer back wall is the defrost circuit, frost around the door is a seal, and a fine crust over everything after a hot week is usually the humidity that came in through a door that was left ajar.

Three ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

  • The defrost heater or its control has failed

The coil ices up until air stops passing it. The freezer often still holds while the fridge above or beside it goes warm.

    Defrost system repair from $159
  • The door is not closing properly

A hardened gasket, a dropped door or a drawer that stops it shutting. Warm wet air comes in all day and freezes on the first cold surface it meets.

    Door seal replacement from $129
  • The cabinet is being opened into a humid room

A kitchen at 80% humidity in August puts a surprising amount of water into a cabinet, and a machine already marginal will show it as frost.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

Photograph the frost before clearing it

The pattern says whether the defrost ran partly, or not at all.

  2. 02

Run a note round the door seal

Paper closed in the door at several points: where it pulls out freely, the seal is not holding.

  3. 03

Look for a drawer or a box fouling the door

The commonest free explanation, and the one people find last.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “A sheet of ice on the back wall is the defrost circuit, and it will not clear itself”
  • “Frost at the door edge is a seal or an alignment question”
  • “Chipping it out buys a week; the reason it formed decides whether it comes back”
Cast-iron burner grates lifted off a stainless gas cooktop and set on a light counter beside the exposed burner heads, bright daylight.

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

About Frigidaire frost building up inside

What to do in the next ten minutes

Look at where the frost actually is and take a photograph before you touch it — that picture is genuinely useful to us. Do not attack it with anything sharp: the aluminum tubing behind that back wall is thin, and a screwdriver through it turns a defrost repair into a sealed system repair. Check whether anything is stopping the door closing fully while you are there.

Reading the pattern

Frost tells a story if you look at it before you clear it. An even sheet across the evaporator behind the back wall means the defrost heater has not been running at all. A band of ice at the top with clear metal below means it ran, but not for long enough. Frost concentrated at one corner of the door means air is getting in there and the seal or the hinge is the job. This is why the photograph is worth taking: once the cabinet has been defrosted by hand, the evidence has gone with it.

What defrosting it yourself does and does not do

Emptying the cabinet and leaving it open overnight will clear the ice and the machine will work properly for a few days or a few weeks. That is worth knowing — it is a legitimate way to save the food while a visit is arranged. What it does not do is fix anything, and the interval before it comes back is roughly how bad the underlying problem is.

Questions about Frigidaire frost building up inside

How long before it comes back?

If it is the defrost circuit, usually one to three weeks after a manual defrost. If it is the door, it depends on the weather. Either way the interval itself is information, so tell us how long it took.

Is a little frost normal?

A light dusting on the coldest surfaces after a hot day is ordinary. A sheet you can pick up in one piece, or ice that needs to be chipped, is not.
