What Repairing a Frigidaire Ice Maker Costs, and the Cheaper Thing to Check First
Two appliances share the phrase and they are priced separately. The module inside a refrigerator starts at $139, and the supply half of that circuit — the fill valve, the line and the shut-off at the wall — starts at $119, which matters because the supply side is where these actually fail most. A countertop machine starts at $99, and descaling one starts at $89, which is the lowest figure published anywhere on this site. Before any of those, three checks cost nothing and account for a large share of the calls: whether the shut-off arm is in the down position, whether the freezer is genuinely cold enough for the mold thermostat to trigger, and whether the machine is simply scaled rather than failing. This maker publishes no error code for any ice maker of either kind, so nothing on the appliance will tell you which of those it is — but the shape of what is in the bin will.
The full guide
How much to repair a Frigidaire ice maker depends first on which appliance you mean, because on this badge there are two and they are not related.
How much to repair Frigidaire ice maker? Two appliances, one phrase
The ice maker is the module bolted inside the freezer of a refrigerator. It is plumbed to the house supply, it is controlled by the cabinet, and it is a small machine inside a large one.
The ice machine is the standalone countertop unit with a reservoir you fill by hand. This maker builds three of those and builds no plumbed undercounter cabinet at all — which is worth saying, because people arrive here looking for a repair on an undercounter machine that this badge has never made.
They fail differently and they cost differently.
The figures
Module in a refrigerator — from $139. The unit itself is a stocked part on this make, so it is normally one visit.
Fill valve, water line and shut-off — from $119. Lower than the module, and this is the more common repair. The supply half of the ice circuit is where these actually fail: a saddle valve fitted at delivery, a quarter-inch line crushed when the cabinet was pushed back, or a screen in the fill valve packed with scale.
Countertop machine — from $99.
Descaling a countertop machine — from $89. The lowest figure published anywhere on this site, and frequently the whole repair.
The from $89 diagnostic is credited toward whichever of those the work turns out to be.
The three checks that cost nothing
This maker publishes no error code for any ice maker of either type — no table, no list, nothing. So the appliance will not tell you what is wrong, and the diagnosis is what is in the bin.
Is the arm down? On a module with a wire shut-off arm, a box of frozen food pushing that arm up makes the machine believe the bin is full. It stops, silently, and stays stopped because the box does not move. This is the single most common cause we find and the repair is to move the box.
Is the freezer cold enough? The mold has a thermostat on it that waits for roughly nine degrees before harvesting. A freezer sitting above five will leave the ice maker waiting indefinitely — not broken, waiting. A thermometer overnight settles it, and if that is the answer the real repair is the cabinet.
Is it just scaled? On a countertop machine, slow and cloudy is almost always mineral buildup rather than failure. Scale on the evaporator fingers is an insulator: the cycle lengthens, the cubes never fully harden, and the pump works against a restriction.
What the bin tells you, which decides the figure
Nothing at all. The arm, the supply, or the freezer temperature. Two of those three are free.
Hollow or half-size cubes. The freezing half works; the mold got less water than it asked for. That is the supply side — around $119.
One solid block. The cubes were made and not released, or were released and refroze. That is the harvest half — the mold heater or the ejector — and it points at the module, around $139.
Slow, soft, cloudy on a countertop machine. Scale. From $89 and no part at all.
That single look before you call changes which figure applies, and occasionally removes the need for the call.
When we say do not
On a countertop machine, a failed pump or a sealed-system problem is the point where the repair approaches what the machine cost new. These were not expensive appliances and we would rather show you both numbers than take the work.
On a refrigerator module, the arithmetic almost always favors the repair — it is a stocked part on a cabinet that is worth far more than the module.
The thing that prevents most of this
For a module: take ice regularly. In a second home or a rental between tenancies, ice sits, melts slightly, and refreezes around the auger into a solid mass. This maker documents that one — DI SP, ice jammed in the chute — and its own list of causes names infrequent use, temperature swings and power outages, which is a fair description of a South Florida summer.
For a countertop machine: descale it every two or three months on tap water here, and empty the basket at the end of the day rather than letting it stand. The basket is insulated, not refrigerated, and ice left in it welds itself into a block.
If it turns out to be a repair
What this leads to, and what it costs
Every job on this site is priced the same way: an on-site diagnostic first, the figure agreed in writing before anybody starts.
-
from $139 Ice maker repair
The module inside the refrigerator: no ice, hollow cubes, a bin frozen into one block, or a dispenser that grinds and delivers nothing. Half of these calls end on the water side rather than in the ice maker itself, which is why the first questions are about the filter and the dispenser rather than about the module.
- Half of these end at the filter, the valve or the fill tube
- Hollow or small cubes are a flow story, not a freezing one
- A bin frozen solid points at compartment temperature or a door seal
-
from $99 Countertop ice machine service
Frigidaire's standalone ice makers are three countertop machines — a reservoir you fill by hand, a pump, a set of chilled fingers and a basket the machine does not keep frozen. They fail in small-appliance ways, and we are straightforward about the economics: scale, a pump or a sensor is worth doing, and a sealed-system failure on a machine of this class usually is not.
- A countertop appliance, not a plumbed cabinet — this badge builds no undercounter machine
- Scale, pump priming and the full-basket sensor cause most of it
- We say when a repair is not worth the money instead of taking it
-
The bin is empty and nothing is arriving Ice maker not making ice
One question sorts most of these before anybody is booked: does the water dispenser still work? Water at the dispenser but no ice separates the ice half of the circuit from the supply in a sentence, and neither water nor ice sends the whole diagnosis back to the filter and the shut-off. Half of these calls end on the water side rather than at the ice maker itself.
- Water at the dispenser but no ice narrows this to the ice half of the circuit
- No water either sends us to the filter, the line and the shut-off
- The fill tube freezing closed is commoner than the module failing
Questions people ask about this
How much to repair a Frigidaire ice maker if it is the whole module?
From $139 including the visit, and on this badge the module is a stocked part rather than an order, so it is usually one trip. It is worth knowing that the module is replaced less often than it is blamed — the fill valve upstream of it fails considerably more.
Is it worth repairing a countertop ice maker at all?
It depends what is wrong. Descaling from $89 on a machine that has gone slow and cloudy is money well spent. A failed pump or compressor in a machine that was inexpensive new is the point where we will show you the arithmetic rather than take the work.
